Sebastian Janas Posthumously Awarded NFDA 2026 Fastener Professional of the Year

The National Fastener Distributors Association (NFDA) is honored to announce that the 2026 recipient of its Fastener Professional of the Year award is Sebastian Janas.

In her nomination of Sebastian, Jennifer Sturm stated: “Sebastian was a man of his word. Absolutely a high integrity individual that led his team by example. He was focused on relationships and improving product and process.”

Sebastian Janas was born in Poland and immigrated to the United States with his family at age 11. Ryszard, Sebastian’s father, immigrated to America seven years prior, in 1986, and once established, brought his family. Sebastian arrived in America with no knowledge of English; however, he demonstrated determination and resilience, working hard throughout his school years to build a better future. His dedication allowed him to complete both high school and college in just three years each.

Sebastian’s interest in the fastener industry began at around age 14, inspired by his father, Ryszard, who helped to start Rumco, a fastener manufacturing business. Sebastian spent Saturdays at the company learning how fasteners were made, gaining early hands-on experience. Once he was old enough, he officially joined Rumco, starting from the ground up by washing parts. He continued working there through high school and college, gradually learning every aspect of the business.

Sebastian met his wife Agnieszka while on vacation in Poland in 1996. After four years in a long-distance relationship, they married in 2000 and just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2025.

While attending DeVry University in Chicago, Sebastian worked in the shipping department at Rumco, and after graduating, was offered a full-time position in sales, which he accepted.

In 2006, Sebastian’s career advanced significantly when he secured his first management position, an important milestone that came at the same time as the birth of his daughter, Victoria. Becoming a father was deeply meaningful to him and served as a powerful source of motivation, strengthening his drive to succeed and provide for his family. In 2009, his son Brian was born, further enriching his personal life. Known for his dedication and ambition, Sebastian continued to grow professionally, quickly rising through the ranks. Within a few years, he was leading operations at two fastener companies, Rumco and Hi-Performance.

In 2020, Sebastian was offered a position at Sems and Specials, an opportunity he was both honored and excited to accept. Despite holding the title of president, he remained closely connected to the hands-on aspects of the business, frequently working on the production floor, reviewing projects, and staying engaged with day-to-day operations. It was uncommon to find him behind a desk. His deep understanding of sales, manufacturing, and management set him apart as a respected leader and expert in the fastener industry.

Sebastian was also very involved in various organizations and associations. He was a big supporter of Dream Riders, a foundation providing clinical therapy and equine-assisted programs for children. He was also an active member of NFDA, MWFA, and IFI, where he was set to move up to the Board of Directors. He openly volunteered his time and always shared his knowledge to help others in the industry. Committed to continuous personal improvement, he also earned multiple certifications, including a Six Sigma Black Belt.

Sebastian’s family will accept the NFDA Fastener Professional of the Year award in his memory at the NFDA Annual Meeting & ESPS® in Indianapolis, Indiana, on June 18, 2026. For more information or to register for the NFDA Annual Meeting & ESPS®, visit www.nfda-fastener
