Remembering Larry Sharringhausen

Lawrence Arnold Scharringhausen, 82, was born October 18, 1941, in Arlington Heights, IL to Arnold and Myrtle (nee Geisler) Scharringhausen. Jesus called him home on Friday, May 3, 2024, at his home.

Larry was an honest businessman who built a successful 50-year fastener distribution business, Liberty Fastener Co. He was highly respected in his industry and loved by his employees. He dabbled in stocks and was an active member of an investment club. His extensive civic involvements include President of the Arlington Heights Historical Society 1992-1999, and President of the Elk Grove Cemetery. He was a student and life-long member of St Peter Lutheran School and Church.

Larry lived a full life. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting in Wisconsin and fishing in Florida, Wisconsin, and Alaska. He also loved the game of golf and played in the Arlington Lakes Men’s Golf League for 43 years. He took great joy in spending time with his family and entertaining his friends in his barn (the “party place”) and yard. A true patriot, Larry was host to over 100 guests at his home for the Annual Arlington 4th of July Parade. He took pleasure in maintaining his Koi pond, planting and reaping the fruits of his extensive garden, playing cards and wintering at his home in Florida where he was captain and skipper of his pontoon party boat. He was an avid reader and had a passion for learning new skills. He took landscaping and stained-glass classes after which he designed his own yard and made stained glass windows for his historic home. He also loved car shows and cars (especially his Cadillac STS-V) and even built his own replica 1927 Bugatti. Larry liked traveling abroad and in the US, antiquing, family dinners (especially Thanksgiving) and a fine gin on the rocks. He cheered on his grandchildren by supporting their sports teams and attending their games and dance shows. His grandsons will cherish the memory of the vacation he took with them to a location of their choice for their 8th grade graduation. He had a special relationship with his extended family visiting and enjoying time with his many nieces and nephews. Larry had a warm and caring place in his heart for animals, particularly Jack Russell Terriers and in his charitable nature he regularly contributed to over 20 organizations. He will be remembered for his smile, big hugs and kind, fun-loving and generous spirit.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sharon (nee Von Oepen); his children, John (Laurie) Shahinian, Michael (Vicki) Scharringhausen, Lisa (Bill) Seagraves, Shari (Dean) Nickens, and Janet (Ron) Fowler; his grandchildren, Madeline (Dan) Mowery, Megan (Caleb) Bounds, Shannon Shahinian, Eric and Samantha Scharringhausen, Bill and Sara Seagraves, Alexander and Victoria Nickens, Nick (Karina) and Nathan Fowler; his great grandchildren, Amelia Mowery and Leo and Elliana Fowler; his sister-in-law Eileen (Lee) Burden and many nieces and nephews.
