NFDA’s 2023 Executive Summit Next Week

A great educational program is lined up for the NFDA 2023 Executive Summit, October 25-27, at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Culture: How to Make It a Competitive Advantage

Presented by Bill Kaiser, Culture Wise

The famed management professor, Peter Drucker, once said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” According to Bill Kaiser at CultureWise (a leading consulting firm dedicated to fostering the development of company culture as a competitive weapon), there are five ways a vibrant company culture boosts the bottom line:

  1. Improving retention and recruitment
  2. Reducing burnout
  3. Inspiring innovation
  4. Boosting efficiency and productivity
  5. Elevating the customer experience

In this session, you’ll get an overview of a process to convert your company’s unique cultural characteristics into a series of behaviors that can be taught and reinforced. Bill Derry, chairman of Field Fasteners, will be on hand to share how this approach has benefited Field.

Hacked? Don’t Hesitate, You’re Next! Panel Program

Panelists include:

  • Jerrad Douberly – Threaded Fasteners
  • Scott Longfellow – Huyett
  • Doug Ruggles – Martin Supply
  • Nick Ruetz – AIS

Cybersecurity risk is real, and it is dangerous. Scott Longfellow will lead a discussion with panelists as they recount their experiences on the bad end of cyber extortion. Each will talk about their experiences as victims of ransomware attacks, in some cases costing seven figures in paid ransoms and for consultants, legal, and security experts. Longfellow will discuss technology and behavioral measures that thwart unrelenting criminals including multi-factor authentication, immutable backups, air-gap servers, user awareness training, and managed defensive devices and services.

The panel will review the structures, costs, and benefits of cyber insurance. There will be a Q&A opportunity for members to vet their own concerns and issues.

Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence

Presented by Jim Derry, Field Fastener

What is this and what does it mean? This session will review the basic architecture of data models and data modeling. Data analytics is more than “what gets measured, gets done.” There is a process to synthesize data and a process to ensure that user communities can benefit from the use of data to drive better results. Once a dataset is defined, do you build the models yourself, or outsource?

Jim Derry, the NFDA’s Fastener Professional of the Year in 2020, is the Chief Executive Officer of Field Fastener and a subject matter expert. Prior to Jim’s work in the fastener industry, he was an executive at Harris and worked in the deployment of technology to business applications. Derry will walk participants through the history of the development of data analytics. He will describe the learning journey and processes to help management define what data they have, what data they need, and what data they can use. Derry will share several real-world examples from his own stewardship of the process at Field and will invite audience participants to share their own experiences.

There will be a brief discussion on the impacts of artificial intelligence and near-term potential future uses.

China Invades or Blockades Taiwan? If So, When? How? Why? How Would the World React?

Presented by Donald Critchlow, Center for American Institutions at Arizona State

This session will examine in depth one of the most critical and vital risks that the fastener industry has ever encountered: war in Taiwan or a naval blockade of trade.

Donald Critchlow is the Katzin Family Professor and Director of the newly established Center for American Institutions at Arizona State University. He is the author of many books including Revolutionary Monsters: Five Men Who Turned Liberation into Tyranny (Regnery, 2021) and In Defense of Populism: Protest and Democracy (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2020. He has written for NewsMax magazine, the New York Post, Claremont Review of Books, and other prominent conservative outlets. He is frequently interviewed by major international news outlets. He has lectured throughout Europe, as well as in China and Brazil.
